Artist Statement

I question my mind’s earthly sight

Are we all not just an assemblage of creatures communing

in this shared realm?

A full and cosmic collective

of quirky little beings

dancing, offering, collapsing, protecting, holding, creating

A playful but tendered exhaustion

Sight lines obscured, for the masks are heavy

Clumsy and eclipsing as we move

Let me see you

I want to witness

Your subconscious

Your shadows

A peculiar and most strange intimacy

to be truly seen

There are true faces beneath our iconographies and bodily cartographies

Inconspicuous until the light catches

The creatures sing together

An invocation of incantations

Beckoning with attention and breath

Let the song haunt you into presence

Attuned attention

Look at us

Paralyzed in time and space

We are the portal

You need no invitation

Let us make art in these liminal times

May we sprinkle mythos and light on places where darkness has steeped its bitter tea

Artist Bio

Louise Garrie is a masked artist working at the threshold of sculpture, assemblage, ritual, and myth. Her creatures emerge from the shadowed territories of memory, identity, and the subconscious, places where what protects us may also obscure our sight. She offers these beings as emissaries and invitations, believing that art can call forth truths held within both the individual soul and the collective consciousness.

Little is known of Garrie herself. She moves through this realm as one of her own masked creatures, allowing the work to exist beyond biography, expectation, or explanation. She hopes these beings will beckon others to look beneath their own masks and create from whatever stirs there, for she believes that, when darkness gathers, art is how we summon the light.
