Mela

December 1, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Artist Reception: Majka Sadel, 5-8p

Venue: Mela

Medium: Oil Paintings

After Hours, 7-9p

When you’re out walking for the Arts Friday night, be sure to stop at Mela and meet artist Majka Sadel.

Mela’s pleased to be hosting an exhibition of Majka’s latest oil paintings, completed over the last two years. (See her Artist and Exhibition Statements below)

This opening reception, during Wenatchee’s First Friday’s December Arts Walk, runs from 5 – 8 pm. Or join us later in the evening for the NCW Arts Alliance’s After Event, 7-9.

Mela’s baristas are ready when you’re interested in a hot beverage, a glass of wine, or a cookie from the pastry case.

For 17 years, Mela has been at the center of growing Wenatchee’s arts scene, first as a music venue and then as a space for artists to exhibit their Art.

In keeping with Mela’s tradition of hosting artists and their work, we’re looking forward to also hosting this month’s post Arts Walk After Event 7-9pm.

The After Event is a great time to kick back, talk art and meet some of the board members of our nascent NCW Arts Alliance…they’re the folks putting on the Arts Walk, publishing the monthly ArtBeat newsletter highlighting area arts events, growing our regional Arts footprints, and keeping us all informed about artist opportunities beyond the valleys of NCW.

Majka’s Artist Statement

My life story is simple. I was born in Poland, studied linguistics at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and art at the Academy of Fine Art in Krakow. After working as a linguist at the U.S. Army’s Defense Language Institute in California, I moved to Washington where I completed my MFA in painting from Central Washington University. After 15 years of teaching courses in painting, drawing, design, and art history at Wenatchee Valley College, I retired and I now pursue my own schedule of painting and creation.

Majka Sadel’s Exhibition Statement

The paintings in this exhibit collectively represent a modest distillation of the previous two years of my life – a period of experience filled with loss and life and discovery. Events big enough to challenge my normal perceptions of reality, the meaning of life, and much more.

Sometimes creation is the result of something already imagined and the creation follows, more or less, the path of the already understood vision; and sometimes creation happens a different way: it refuses to follow a preconceived path and instead must be understood only after it comes into existence. It’s as if the thing created has its own notion of timing and meaning that it intends to express once it arrives. And one waits for it without judgment to see what it has to say. These paintings followed the latter path and my very brief explanation of them is necessarily of an ex-post nature.

The objects recognizable in the paintings function as portals of a sort, or symbols of emotional territories.  Functionally, they remind me of an idea expressed by one of my favorite thinkers:

“[Nature phenomena] are rendered in the form of their spiritual reference. The transformation of nature in art is rendering the nature phenomenon transparent to transcendence.

– Joseph Campbell – Mythos Video Series, vol 1 part 2.

The objects you see in the paintings are not there for their own sake, or not only for their own sake. They do not occupy their space, functionally, only as the particular object they seem to be. These few objects that appear in each painting, together with their surroundings, create a mood or an emotional pathway, that can allow the viewer access (transparency) to different layers of meaning and ideas prompted by the works.

My hope is that my works resonate with those who spend some time with them.
