Featured Artist: Barry Kling exhibits B/W Photography and Sumi Paintings AND Mela Coaster Project 2024 Pop-up during the ArtsWalk!

Artist’s Statement:
Barry Kling has been making black and white images for over 45 years, usually with large format cameras and recently with Chinese ink, brushes and handmade paper. His fascination with art dates to the hours spent as a child gazing at the big art books at the county library. Even when looking at early European painting he tended to ignore the saints and villains in the foreground while taking in the landscapes behind. He has been doing some sort of art ever since, while having a family and professional career along the way.
Exhibition Statement:
The best summary of Kling’s artistic intentions is a quote from the mountaineer and sometime mystic W.H. Murray: “Find beauty; be still.” Not the stillness of paralysis but the still center from which one can see most clearly. Not a denial of ugliness and suffering, but an experience that enables us to persist in spite of them. People make art for many different reasons but this is what Kling hopes to capture.
Good Cause Coaster Art Project
First Mark Making Session: May 3rd, 5-8 pm during Wenatchee First Friday Arts Walk. Cost: $1 per blank coaster. Hosted by karendawndean.
The goal is to “wallpaper” the back hall with a mosaic of 1000 4″ x 4″ community-made pieces of Coaster Art, all of which will be available to purchase at $10 each.
Proceeds will go to regional arts programming and/or individual artist’s efforts.
There will be 8 making sessions between now and when the show opens, December 6, 2024, hosted by different artists with assorted making skills.
Basic supplies will be provided, but if you have a favorite marker, pencil or pair of paper cutting scissors, feel free to bring them.
