Her creatures emerge from the shadowed territories of memory\, identity\, and the subconscious\, places where what protects us may also obscure our sight. She offers these beings as emissaries and invitations\, believing that art can call forth truths held within both the individual soul and the collective consciousness. \nLittle is known of Garrie herself. She moves through this realm as one of her own masked creatures\, allowing the work to exist beyond biography\, expectation\, or explanation. She hopes these beings will beckon others to look beneath their own masks and create from whatever stirs there\, for she believes that\, when darkness gathers\, art is how we summon the light.

The exhibition explores five themes drawn directly from the Declaration of Independence: Created Equal; Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness; Free and Independent States; Consent of the Governed; and We Mutually Pledge.\n\nThe featured moments from American history inspire curiosity about the events that shaped the nation. They remind us that our story was never inevitable\, we shaped it at every turn. The exhibition was developed through a multi-state collaboration to ensure that Americans throughout the nation would have the opportunity to meaningfully engage in the nation’s 250th anniversary\, while highlighting significant stories from Washington State and North Central Washington.\n\nFree admission.

Rooted in the material language of clay\, her ceramic vessels in an altered environment serve as intimate altars for celebration\, ritual\, adoration\, and return.\n\n\n\nExhibition Statement:\nSoft Altars explores the quiet alchemy of the everyday\, where ordinary objects become sites of celebration\, ritual\, and return. Ceramic vessels serve as intimate altars to love\, family\, stewardship\, the natural world\, artistic ancestry\, and community. Rooted in the material language of clay\, the exhibition considers the sacred possibilities of everyday life and the quiet forms of adoration found in tending to one another.\n\n\n\nBIO:\nSarah Sprouse is a visual artist\, educator\, and art historian. She holds a PhD in the History of Art from the University of Edinburgh\, with research focusing on women ceramic artists\, collaborative studio practices\, and histories of craft.  Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in several permanent collections. Across her work\, Sprouse is committed to supporting artists and building meaningful\, inclusive communities through the arts. In addition to teaching ceramics at Wenatchee Valley College\, she also serves as Executive Director of the Grünewald Guild.
